FAQ's

Q. What should I do if I want to change the details of my beneficiary?

A. Send an email to GIS@derbyshirebenevolenttrust.com explaining that you wish to change these details. We will then email you a link to a pro forma for you to check all the details we hold on file and to amend those details you wish to change. Like all details concerning your membership, this information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Please note:  The person registered with you on file may be considered as your beneficiary until they are removed.

Q. I have a joint subscription but my partner details have changed. Do I have to inform the trust?

A. There are a number of options now available to members. To ensure you have the best option for your circumstances, please email GIS@derbyshirebenevolenttrust.com explaining your circumstances. We will then provide you with the options available to you. Your email will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Please note: Claims can only be accepted for partners who have applied to join and been accepted into the scheme by the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust.

If your partner changes and you want to continue subscribing for partner cover – your new partner must apply to join the scheme. You cannot add or change a partner once you have retired.

Q. I am getting divorced, at what point will my spouse cover cease?

A. The fact that you are getting divorced affects aspects of the GIS cover in different ways. Some may mean that cover has to cease for your ex-partner, some allow the cover to continue, provided that we have been notified. If you do not notify us of your impending divorce you may lose some cover or in fact, you could be paying for cover that you no longer need or want.
To ensure you have the right cover for you and your circumstances, please contact email GIS@derbyshirebenevolenttrust.com explaining your circumstances. We will then provide you with the options available for you. Your email will be treated with the strictest confidence.
Please ensure that you notify the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust as soon as this is the case so that your subscriptions can be reduced accordingly.

Q. I need more than £100,000 of life cover. Can I increase the amount of cover I have?

A. Yes, you can. Members can apply to purchase additional cover in increments of £50,000, £75,000 and £100,000 under the group arrangement.
Email GIS@derbyshirebenevolenttrust.com for an application for more details.

Life Insurance

Q. What is life insurance?

A. Life insurance will pay your dependents money as a lump sum if you die. It’s designed to provide you with the reassurance that your dependents will be financially secure if you’re no longer there to provide for them.

Q. Are there any exclusions?

A. Some life insurance policies have exclusions where they do not pay out, such as drug related deaths or suicide. The DBT Group Insurance scheme will pay out following death from any cause.

Q. Do I need Life Insurance?

A. Not everyone needs life insurance, but if your children, partner or other relatives depend on your income to cover the mortgage or other living expenses, then the answer is yes – you probably do want life insurance, since it will help provide for your family in the event of your death. In the majority of cases if you have a mortgage your lender will require you to have adequate life insurance before lending you the money to purchase your house.

Q. Doesn’t my Pension provide for my family in the event of my death?

A. The lump sum paid to your dependents from your pension is determined by the pension scheme you are in. Please contact the pension administrator for more details

In some schemes your dependents may also receive a monthly income dependent upon your length of service and contributions, although this will probably be significantly less than your salary and in the majority of cases it will be insufficient to fully provide for your family and replace the loss of your income should you die.

Q. What happens if I die?

A. The life cover on the Group Insurance Scheme is written in trust. This means that the payment can be paid quickly and free from your estate so does not attract inheritance tax. Usually the money is paid to your beneficiaries within a week of the claim being submitted.

Initially the payment is paid to the Trustees, who will then pay the money to your beneficiaries. You will have filled out a beneficiary nomination form when you first joined the scheme and it is helpful, and will assist the process if you update this form if your circumstances change.  Contact the DBT Office if you need to update your details.

Q. Can I nominate more than one person as a Beneficiary?

A. Yes. If for example you wish to divide the amount between your children the beneficiary nomination form allows for this.

Q. If I need additional life insurance can I top it up?

A. The scheme has a cost-effective group top up scheme available to members in the following amounts:

£50,000      £75,000       £100,000

Supplementary cover can be carried into retirement, but subscriptions and benefits will vary.

Please email GIS@derbyshirebenevolenttrust.com

Q. What about retired members?

A. As level of risk changes as we get older there are changes to the levels of cover when you retire. The level of cover and price is dependent upon your age and selected option and you should check the DBT website for full details of the cover.

Vehicle Breakdown Insurance

Q. Are there mileage recovery restrictions on breakdown cover?

A. No, some breakdown covers are now stating that there is a mileage restriction on recovery if the vehicle does not have a spare tyre or an inflator kit or is not fitted with Run flat tyres.

This is NOT the case for the DBT breakdown scheme.

Q. How has COVID impacted breakdown cover?

A. During periods of Covid restrictions it may be that members cannot travel in the recovery vehicle.

If this is the case alternative transport will be arranged for the people in the car at no additional cost for members.

Holidays

Q. My Son/Daughter is employed under an apprenticeship scheme. Are they covered under the travel policy?

The upper age limit for dependent children is 23, provided they are in full time education.

With regard to those in apprenticeships the insurers explain:

Full Time Education/Apprenticeships.

  • A programme of learning provided by a recognised education body that leads to a qualification by examination or assessment, which is either:
    • 1. full-time study; or
    • 2. a mixture of study and works experience where at least two thirds of the total time for the course is spent on study.

If the majority of time is spent at college (3 to 4 days) and the remainder in the workplace – they can be covered under the travel policy.

If only 1-2 days are spent at college and the remainder in the workplace – they cannot be covered under the travel policy.

Q. Does the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance cover Cancellation due to COVID-19?

Cover would apply if you have to cancel a trip as a result of:

  •  You receiving a positive diagnosis of COVID-19 that necessitates the cancellation
as a direct result of you being required to undertake compulsory
quarantine/self-isolation or the continued suffering of symptoms that result in a
qualified medical practitioner advising against undertaking the intended trip.
  •  Any other insured person that you are travelling with receiving a positive
diagnosis of COVID-19 that directly results in you receiving an official instruction
to undertake compulsory quarantine/self-isolation and necessitating the
    cancellation.
  •  A close relative that you reside with receiving a positive diagnosis of COVID-19
that directly results in you receiving an official instruction to undertake
compulsory quarantine/self-isolation and necessitating the cancellation.

Other than the specified reasons above, there is no cover for any claim in any way
caused by or resulting from COVID-19 under Section 1 – Cancellation or Curtailment,
Section 2 – Journey Continuation, Section 3 – Travel Delay and Section 14 – Travel
Disruption Extension. See General Policy Exclusion 19 (page 9 of the 2021-22 policy
wording).

Q. Am I covered under the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance cover if I travel against Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice?

You will not have cover under the policy if you travel to any country or destination
that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against
“all but essential travel” or “all travel”. See General Policy Exclusion 18 (page 11 of the 2023-24 policy wording) that applies to the whole policy.

Please bear in mind that the FCDO advice is not solely COVID-19 specific and you
should always check the advice applicable to your destination country.

Q. Do the Government’s international travel rules (sometimes referred to as the “traffic light system”) form part of the FCDO advice?

No, they do not. The international travel rules determine the regulations regarding
any need to test, self-isolate or quarantine on entering the UK. Regardless of the
rules applying to travel from the country you intend visiting it is the country specific
FCDO advice that would determine if cover applies under the policy.

Q. Is there cover if the Government’s international travel rules classification applicable to the country I am visiting changes whilst I am there?

The policy, as is standard, excludes claims resulting from any regulations made by
any Public Authority or Government. The Government’s international travel rules
are regulations applying to travellers entering the UK, as opposed to advice. If a
change to regulations by any Public Authority or Government applies to you whilst
you are in another country, there is no cover for any additional costs incurred i.e.
quarantine requirements or an attempt to return home earlier prior to the new
regulations coming into force.

Q. Does the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance include cover for medical, repatriation and additional expenses related to COVID-19?

Yes, it does and in the unfortunate event of you contracting COVID-19 during your
holiday outside the UK cover would apply up to the sum insured of £10,000,000.
Regardless of:

  • The severity of any symptoms (including being asymptomatic), and,
  • Any state or local provision for self-isolation/quarantine or medical care
provided in the country you are in at the time.

You, or someone on your behalf, should contact Ah-Assist (details as
stated on the Schedule and in the Policy) without delay.

This will enable them to provide appropriate assistance including placing a
guarantee of payment, if necessary, to a medical facility, and give consideration to
any reasonable additional expenses that may need to be incurred as a result of the
positive diagnosis.

Q. If, whilst on holiday, I test positive following a pre-travel test in order to return to the UK am I covered if my return to the UK is delayed?

Cover would apply under Section 4 – Medical, Repatriation and Additional Expenses as a positive diagnosis would be deemed Illness, even if you remain asymptomatic.
You should contact AH-Assist without delay to enable them to provide appropriate assistance including placing a guarantee of payment, if necessary, to a medical facility, and give consideration to any reasonable additional expenses that may need to be incurred as a result of the positive diagnosis.

Q. We are worried that the entry requirements of the country we are due to travel to could change and require us to quarantine/self-isolate on arrival. Can we cancel the trip and claim under the policy?

Cancelling the trip due to concerns of what may occur would not be covered under the policy as you would be considered to be deciding not to travel. See General Exclusion 20(a) (page 11 of the 2023-24 policy wording).

additional accommodation and travel expenses incurred in order that you reach the
next docking port to enable you to re-join the cruise, or to reach the final
destination of the cruise, as a result of requiring hospital treatment on dry land.

Q. Does the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance include cover for medical, repatriation and additional expenses related to COVID-19?

of contracting COVID-19 you, or someone on your behalf, should contact Ah-Assist (details as stated on the Schedule and in the Policy) without delay.

Q. Does the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance exclude travelling against Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice?

Yes, like most travel insurance policies, there is no cover in respect of travel to any
country or destination that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
(FCDO) has advised against “all but essential travel” or “all travel”.

Q. Does the Derbyshire Benevolent Trust – Membership Travel Insurance include cover for travel, cancellation and curtailment and full cover for any and all pre- existing medical conditions worldwide, or as a minimum, in the countries you are due to visit?

The cover provided is Worldwide (as shown on the Schedule). Like most travel
insurance policies, the cover excludes pre-existing medical conditions in certain
circumstances. Regardless of the type of holiday, you should ensure that you are
aware of any exclusions and whether or not they apply to you and your personal
circumstances (see page 11 of the Policy for details).

Q. We understand travel documents may be checked at the terminal prior to boarding and that the cover must apply for the full duration of the holiday. What should we provide?

Regardless of the type of holiday or trip, it is prudent to ensure that you have a full
copy of your policy documents, just in case of the unexpected. It is a matter of
personal preference whether you take a printed copy, electronically saved copy or a
combination of both. Having a printed copy of the Schedule may be of benefit for
terminal checks and, in the unfortunate event of, attending a medical facility.
